Here is the best way to clean makeup brushes like a pro! You will love the routine once you get into it! I just finished cleaning mine. Washing them every two weeks is a good habit to get into. Makeup goes on easier and cleaner when this routine is kept. Are you wondering what is the right way to clean makeup brushes? Good for you for wanting to keep your brush collection in good shape! Keeping skin healthy is a concern at any age. Clean brushes are a huge part of that if you wear makeup. ( If you are reading this, I’m assuming that you do wear makeup.)
A healthy skin looks best at any age. Clean brushes give makeup a smoother look. A clean brush is very important especially around the eyes and lips. Skin will look healthier when you use clean brushes and keep your makeup fresh. After you clean your brushes, check out my post about other ways to look younger than you are.
Cleaning brushes every two weeks is a good idea. Sharing makeup brushes is not a great idea, so if you do that I would then go ahead and clean them right afterwards. The exception would be eye liner and lip brushes. Clean those more frequently, once a week or right after switching colors.
How to clean makeup brushes
A few important guidelines can make the process much easier!
- Use a very gentle shampoo (unscented if you like) An antibacterial hand soap works as well. Use a gentle unscented dish soap for brushes used with cream products like lip and concealer brushes.
- Wet the brush, not going above the ferrule (the metal part of the brush) So you can clean the brush surface and onto the metal, but do not run water into the metal where it attaches to the handle. This will eventually cause shedding and breakdown the bond to the handle. If you need to pre-soak a brush, do just the bristles.
- When you dry the brushes lay them over the edge of a counter so the water can evaporate off the brush, not back into the handle. Don’t use a paper towel under this setup as it might end up sticking and holds water that you don’t want your brushes sitting in.
Get Started
The easiest way to start is to gather all of your brushes and some soap, you may want a gentle hand soap or shampoo for powder brushes and a dish soap or clarifying shampoo for lip and eyeliner brushes and some foundation brushes. Pull this together near a sink and get a surface ready where you are able to let the brushes dry overnight. I like to use a dresser in my house that is topped with glass. You could use a kitchen or bath counter as well. A big tip is this: lay the brush so the ferrule is just off the edge. The large picture above pinterest graphic shows what I mean. You do not want brush heads laying in water. Let them hang slightly over the edge.
Take each brush one at a time and with some soap in your palm lather up the bristles till clean. Rinse holding the brush at an angle into running water. point the bristles toward the sink and rinse, again not getting water into the ferrule of the brush. Wipe the handle gently if it looks messy. Squeeze the bristles gently to their natural pattern and lay each brush individually to dry. Use the trick above to keep the brush head off of the drying surface.
Most of the time drying overnight is best. Some large brushes could take a little longer to dry especially if it’s humid weather.
Beauty Blender Cleaning
Since the beauty blenders are sponges, they are tricky to clean! I find using just a little clear dish soap helps. A small squeeze of soap and let it soak in for a bit before rinsing it out. You will be squeezing and rinsing for a little while so go easy on the soap! This is a tool that you will want to replace frequently, but if you keep it clean it will last longer. Your beauty blender can also dry overnight.
There are special silicone mats to clean brushes with as well as platforms you can purchase for drying.. These are some tools that might make the job easier. Here is a hand held pad that you can use as a surface to clean brush heads. I did see some companies make one that sits in the sink, however I like that this is held in your hand. It’s a more sanitary option.
Your brushes will be in great shape the next day and for a long time when you use this method!
As a side note, keep a small clean toothbrush for cleaning eyelash curlers and pencil sharpeners! Let those dry thoroughly after cleaning and a light spritz of rubbing alcohol. Make sure to only use a curler on clean eyelashes and apply your mascara after curling. Even better, see how your mascara looks one day without curling them. It might be a step you can skip! Otherwise check for any breaks in your curler surface and replace if needed.
Hopefully these tips make your brush cleaning simpler and more effective. I hope you enjoy the post! Now that you have mastered this beauty routine, check out my post for healthy natural nails! Follow oneperfectsomething.blog to be updated with new posts!
