Picking a flattering nail polish color starts with trying colors that you feel good wearing! So many times a quick swipe of a color on your nail will let you know if it is going to work. But, how to know which color is best if you aren’t able to try it on? Which colors are best for pale skin? What shade of nail polish makes skin look tan?
Some of us like to think a color choice over for a while. Others like to make the choice quick and fun! Either way, here are some tips for how to choose a flattering nail polish color!
- Consider your skin tone.
- Get inspired by the latest trends and make them your own.
- Pick a classic nail color.
- Do something simple, versatile and low maintenance.
- Pick a nail color that fits your personality!
How to Pick a Flattering Nail Color for Your Skin Tone
One of the best ways to pick a color that you will be happy with is to base your choice on what looks best with your skin tone. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but you can get much closer by trying two or three colors on different nails. I do this for my clients all the time. It makes the decision simpler when you have something to compare a color to. For instance, you might choose OPI red over Color so Hot It Berns if you like a cool red.
If you know whether your undertones are cool or warm, many of the nail polish brands offer descriptions on their websites that help you narrow down your choices. I love the way the Zoya website does this. They describe the colors as warm or cool. As a result, if you already know if you have warm or cool undertones this will help you make the best selection!

Trending Nail Polish Colors
Do you want to know what is trending? It’s fun to check and see the colors that Zoya, OPI and ESSIE are showing each season! Of course, Pinterest is a great source too! The colors usually echo shades shown on the runway and you will notice the different collections each have similar shades.
Sometimes, what is trending isn’t the best look for you. Just like a friend’s beautiful polish might not look as good on us. However, translating the trend to fit your own style can work. So, If a white color is in and doesn’t work for you try a slightly off white.
The Classics
Some of the best classic nail colors come from Chanel and OPI, Essie really nails the light pinks. The way these three brands name their polish make them so memorable that some can’t help becoming a classic. If you run into a color you can’t get anymore search google for a dupe. For instance, search: dupe for “Japanese Rose Garden”. Usually you can find something close.
Nothing too bright? Try Kate from Zoya for your next pedicure or manicure. It is great for a neutral look. Sort of a clay pot color with pink added. Deep enough to show up and give some contrast. A subtle and softer option if you like a classic color and do not want red.
Next, if you like bright colors, try Essie Watermelon. I have noticed that when something is labeled watermelon the color tends to be similar. So whether it is a sweater at Talbots or this polish it tends to be a bright, reddish pink. It is a really classic color. If you like a little contrast, it might be a very flattering nail polish color for you.
Simple Nail Colors
Do you feel better with a light or sheer color? Many of my clients love having a shiny nail in a sheer light pink. It is just so wearable. If you want to improve the condition of your nails, check my How to Have Pretty Natural Nails post.
If you want a polished look that is not going to draw extra attention to your fingers, a sheer nail color looks great. Bela is a pretty Zoya sheer pink shade that works well. Bubble Bath is a classic translucent OPI shade.
Bespoke Polishes
Sometimes, the perfect nail is from a collection of bespoke nail colors. Chanel colors are always just right!
Deborah Lipman, a famous manicurist creates beautiful shades. Even fashion designer Christian Louboutin has created a selection of colors. They have a brush with a handle that resembles a stiletto heel.
Another bespoke nail brand is Smith and Cult. The colors are as imaginative as the super-detailed descriptions that you will find on their site.
Best Pink Nail Colors
Pinks can be light, as in the selection of Essie shades often worn by the Queen and Royals. According to an article in The List, Ballet Slippers from Essie has been worn by The Queen since 1989. On the other hand, Kate Middleton loves Essie Allure. (A translucent white that will let some of your natural pink show through.) Contrary to popular belief, Royal Style expert Myka Meier told Glamour that there is not an official protocol for manicure colors worn by the royals.

How To Choose A Nail Polish Color for An Outfit
Sometimes, when a client is picking a nail color for a special occasion, we have to pick a nail polish color before she has picked an outfit. In this case, I will suggest a shimmery color. Just a little shimmer similar to the way a satin dress reflects the light. It seems to pick up the colors of and outfit really well.
Best Nail Polish Colors for Fair Skin
If you have fair skin, a neutral nail can end up being too close to your own skin tone. Sometimes a sheer pink that is similar to the look of a healthy nail can work if you are trying to stay light. The nails look finished and the hands look more beautiful. I do have some favorite Zoya neutrals. Bela is a nice sheer to translucent pink. Portia is a warm violet leaning color. Pasha is a taupe which has slight violet tones. Alternatively, Barefoot in Barcelona is a pinkish beige. Last, Zoya Spencer or Flynn for a warm tan colored nail. These are some of the best nail polish colors for pale skin.
Best Nail Color for Your Personality!
It’s just nail color right? Sure, but it’s still a big decision! It’s going to be with you for a little while and if you are putting in the effort to polish up those nails you want to like the color!
I find that sometimes, women pick a color based on how it makes them feel over how it makes them look. They want it to be fun, bright and youthful. If this is you, it can be fun to alternate colors, from dark to light each time you polish. Plus, using a light color now and then can be more gentle for the nails.
