Ask yourself what outfits you feel best in. of course, start with the climate and weather at your destination. What are the shorts and tops that make you feel your best pier? If the climate is called pick out your most packable warm coat. Plan to wear your heaviest items during travel so that they don’t have to be packed. Set those items that you know will work for your trip aside as a starting point.
Would you prefer to wear dresses for the day instead of shorts? Take what you have to start with and then you can plan to purchase items. It’s great to have travel basics in neutral colors. Consider colors that make you feel your best! Once you find pieces that work for you during a trip build on these to create your travel wardrobe.
So take a minute to create your simple packing system with these tips! You will find outfits that you feel great in. Travel beauty products will work hard for you. As a result, less will actually be more.
Vacation Essentials
Find an easy, effortless style for travel. Best places to shop for athleisure or something a little more dressy and unique:
- Lululemon
- Nordstrom
- Athleta
- Gap
- Draper James (Founded by Reese Witherspoon)
Packing Your Suitcase
If it is your first trip, bring as much as you can from your current wardrobe instead of trying to shop for everything prior to the trip! Chances are you will find things in your closet that you don’t get much wear from at home. They might be great on a trip. once you get home you can see what worked best. That is a great time to create a capsule wardrobe for travel, starting with the items you liked best during your trip.
Things to Remember
- Think neutral! Grab your neutral colored basics! It doesn’t have to mean black and white! I like using off white because it looks better on me.
- Pack in outfits! This way you won’t be tempted to bring six extra tops at the last minute. You will feel confident that you have enough to wear by packing outfits instead of separates.
- Include dresses that stay put when its windy for walking around during the day.
- A zip hoodie that looks tailored to you is a great travel essential!
- Shorts in a length that works for you.
- Washable tops that can be rolled in your suitcase
- A windbreaker (Mine saved me on a fishing trip!)
Packing Beauty Products for Travel
The hardest part of vacation travel packing is the beauty products! If you are like me you like to have your whole variety of skin and hair care available. In actuality, I know I can get away with so much less!
First, what will you need to keep your hair looking good? Is the weather humid or dry? Try to prioritize based on what you think will work best. For instance, in humid weather, think of shampoo that will keep your hair smooth. In contrast, if your destination is dry, prioritize lotion for face and body.
If you are traveling by car or checking your luggage, you are less limited to what to bring. Deciding to bring full-sized products? You can put them into checked luggage with a few tips. Streamline what you bring, by testing out what you can live without. For instance, will there be a blow-dryer to use at your destination? Try to decide between a straightener or a curling iron. Bringing both can take up a lot of space. The good news is some flat irons will also curl your hair so they can be worth the investment for travel!
If you are flying with just a carry on, of course there are other things to think about. Aerosols and other liquid products should be limited and packed in an individual baggie. Using a little plastic wrap under the cap of products that you have already opened helps avoid leaks too. I have had a can of hair mousse explode in my bag. The worst thing was, I knew it wasn’t something I would end up using anyway. So I am not sure why I was packing it, definitely not the best planning!
Travel with Your Favorite Toiletries
TSA allows one quart-sized bag per person. This bag can contain 3.4 ounce (100ml) or smaller containers. This bag goes in your carry-on and then through security checkpoints. Usually, you need to remove it and put it in a bin. However, some airports do not have you take it out of your carry-on. A quart bag is not a lot of product! Any creative ways to carry less liquid helps. I started to bring bar soap, for instance, instead of body wash.
Second, some tips include using packets inside your baggie. For example, save the sample packages you get during the year. Shampoo and conditioner and lotions often come bundled with a sample.
Third, travel with a tinted moisturizer that contains sunscreen for your face. I still apply sunscreen, but the tinted moisturizer is so travel-friendly and easy to blend. In addition, it gives you a basic level of sun protection each day. If you can skip foundation altogether and just use sunscreen, even better! Similarly, if you like more coverage, powder is a good option. because it does not count as a liquid.
Fourth, label all your containers, so that you are sure which product is in them. Especially for the next time you travel. This way you can keep track of what you have and there is less waste.
Last, try a pill case for dispensing small liquids. This can be put in your quart-sized baggie. It is a great place to put eye cream, concealer and other creams that you just need a little bit for your trip!
