Is it possible to shampoo less often and have great looking hair? Do you wash your hair every day? It seems like a generational thing, but I have noticed that my friends shampoo every day, whereas our daughters shampoo less often. Do you want to start to stretch the time between shampoos? In our 40’s and beyond our hair can get a little more fragile. Using great shampoo and conditioner goes a long way. Limiting heat styling helps, but how can we make this all come together to shampoo less and get shiny hair every day?
Do you wash your hair every day? A lot of us keep the habits that we learned in our teens. I grew up washing my hair every single day and I continued that well into my 30’s and 40’s. Skipping one or two days now, I really appreciate the time I have back in my schedule. So I’m excited to give you these tips to shampoo less and get shiny hair!
There are a few tricks to getting to this point and even beyond to where you can skip a few days. I have fine hair, if you do too, this article is for you! I’m not asking you to skip a week of washing! Start slow with this list of helpful shampoo skipping tips. A few tools will make it so much easier.
How to have shiny hair!
- Many people recommend shampooing the hair 2x if you are planning to skip or have skipped a day. Lather, rinse, repeat. See if that works for you. Concentrate on the areas where you add styling product or parts of your hair that you touch a lot during the day. Use your conditioner with care. Apply just the amount that you need and mostly to the ends of the hair. In addition, use a pic to comb through conditioner in the shower gently.
- Start with a Style! Back in the day of a weekly wash and set, women knew this trick! If you like your hair straight, then be sure to blow dry it straight on the day you shampoo! Try to give it a few minutes to dry before using your blow dryer. Get your hair all the way dry and then use the cool setting to lock in the volume. This will give you a good foundation so that the hair lays nicely. When you do skip a day the time you spend styling is well invested. Check out my pinterest board for some hairstyling ideas!
- Try replacing your blow dryer if you’re finding drying your hair takes too long.
Pump up the volume!
- There’s a few things that you can really do to make your skipping a day easier. Dry Shampoo helps so much, especially if you find the right brand! If you have dark hair, go with a formula for brunettes so that it will be invisible in your hair. Besides giving a fresh scent to the hair, dry shampoo helps with volume!
- Along with dry shampoo, a special brush with boar bristles is a great way to pull the oils from the scalp and distribute them through the hair. You could start using the Wet Brush Pro Shine Enhancer brush. It really helps to build volume, especially on the second day. The boar bristle brush is great for all types of hair!
- Since you are taking the time to style your hair, help it stay for the next day. Use a satin pillowcase, or one designed not to mess up your hair. A satin pillowcase does double duty because it also does not tug on your skin and helps prevent lines from sleeping on your face.
Protect your style
- When I skip a day or two of shampooing, my most essential thing is a shower cap. If hair gets wet it just isn’t as easy to keep it from doing it’s own thing. The shower cap keeps it dry and helps hold your style. If a little bit of hair gets wet I do just dry that piece. I end up with a wave that I don’t like in the bang area otherwise. When I first started skipping washing my hair on the second day I would wash just the bangs and dry them but I find this isn’t necessary now with a shower cap.
Shine On!
Here’s a quick review and list of tools to shampoo less and get shiny hair!
- Shampoo and lite conditioning day one
- A wide tooth comb for conditioning in the shower.
- Replace your blow dryer if necessary
- Shower cap
- Dry Shampoo
- Boar Bristle Brush
- Satin Pillowcase
Train your hair by starting with skipping one more day than you do now. Add a day and make use of that extra time in your day! Each time you are happy with the way your hair looks on the day you skip, you can add an additional shampoo-less day to your routine! One thing that helped me was to skip an extra day and wear my hair up, then brush with the boar bristle brush to distribute the oils. Then finally, wash hair the following morning. Again, if you have fine hair skipping even one day feels great. With coarser hair you may get away with several days.
The goal is to skip one or two more days than you are now! Shampoo less and shine more!
