When the season changes it’s time to change up your skin care routine. As the cold weather hits we start to loose that summer glow! I usually add a few products to my fall and winter makeup routine. Then, every year, I realize that my usual skincare routine isn’t enough in the cold weather. As the temperature drops, do you find that your usual products don’t work as well? They don’t sit nicely on the skin, which is now drier and rougher than it was in the summer. Winter skin needs a little TLC. I put together these winter skincare tips that will have your skin glowing and your makeup going on smoothly. So much of it we know, but if you are like me, a reminder helps!
- Cleanse every night and morning
- Treat your skin to a mask or a gentle exfoliating cleanser twice a week.
- A gentle daily peel or exfoliating lotion can help brighten the skin. I always find that my creams and makeup go on much better when I’m consistent with exfoliation.
- A gentle sugar scrub for the lips will keep your smile fresh. Then, find a lip balm that you love and keep it on your nightstand.
- If you’re outside in the winter try to wear a hat and protect your face especially your eyes with glasses or sunglasses etc. if you have to walk your dog every day, the cumulative effects of chapping can dull and dry the skin.
- Wear a hydrating cream when spending time outside, even if you aren’t made up and ready for your day, use a cream on your face and hands.
- Sunscreen also helps protect from wind if you use a zinc based sunscreen it will help calm as well. In addition, mineral based is great for your face if you can find one that does not give us a whitish appearance that’s even better.
Makeup Tips for Winter!
- Use a hydrating primer, it provides a layer that is prepared and ready to accept your foundation. Some people find that they like primer and don’t need foundation over it!
- Be sure your makeup is the right shade! Especially your foundation. As an alternative, try tinted moisturizer as it offers a balance of coverage and easy blending.
- Blend your foundation with a brush and use a water spray during the day to help rehydrate your skin.
- Go light on concealer and powder in the winter.
- Master your eyeliner so that it looks smooth and by the end of the day and use it hasn’t run down below your lower lashes..
- Check your mascara for flaking, after three months throw it away and replace it! This is a great rule for anything you use around the eyes. Keep your lip and eye pencils sharpened for a crisper look.
- Try cream for blush, eyeshadow and concealer.
- Use less powder, try applying only to areas that become shiny.
- Blend your foundation with a brush and use a water spray during the day to help rehydrate your skin!
Protect Skin with Spf!
A great winter skincare tip is to choose a tinted moisturizer or CC cream that has full spectrum protection from the sun. As an alternative try a protective face spray with spf or a powder that contains mineral sun protection. Any of these options will help keep your skin healthy during the cold months.
Hydration for Healthy Skin in Winter
- Get your greens each day to provide the nourishment your skin needs.
- Refresh your skin care for the season, add in a hydrating serum. Hydration is even more important for skin in cold winter weather.
- Drink lots of water! It’s harder in the winter, but you will be glad when you see plump, glowy skin.
- Shower and wash your face using tepid water instead of hot.
Bonus Winter Skincare Tips!
Wear gloves to keep your hands protected and avoid parched dehydrated skin. So simple, but we shrug it off when it’s not convenient. Get a few pairs that work for you and keep them ready to use. We spend a lot of time on our facial skin, only to have our hands give us away. It’s an easy fix!
Use a silk or satin pillowcase while you sleep. See this post for night time routine ideas!
Use Your Skincare as Intended to Get Better Results!
Each time you do your skin care, take your time and enjoy the process! Starting with your cleanser, tailor your routine to the type of product you’re using. If it’s a foaming cleanser, check the instructions, often you will want to dampen skin and then spread the cleanser around. If you have sensitive eyes, avoid using your cleanser in that area and use an eye makeup remover instead. I love these wash cloths they stay nice wash after wash and even though they are gentle they help remove all traces of make up.
If you are using a cream cleanser try using it with dry hands on a dry face spreading it on and then massaging it in and rinsing off again. This way you know all traces of makeup are gone. If you use a cleanser that’s meant to deep clean the skin twice a week it will help the appearance of your pores. Masking will also help! Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of any cleanser or mask.
Winter skincare tip for choosing a cream, make sure you’re using something rich in hyaluronic acid and ceramides to prevent dry skin in winter. Also, if you are sensitive make sure that your cream is protecting you during the day with calming ingredients.
Create a more relaxing skin care routine by using a gua sha stone. First, apply your cream. Next use the stone in an upward and outward motion. A little gentle pressure on the stone will help your skin to absorb all those good ingredients and hydrate the skin.
Natural isn’t always better! If you are sensitive be sure to double check all your products by testing on a small area. Your cheeks most likely tend to be the most sensitive. If you find that you are wanting to change up your skin care and you do have sensitive skin check one product at a time don’t change it out all at once you’ll be much much less likely to have a reaction.
The cold weather can be really rough on your skin, so wearing a cream to prevent chapping is a good idea whenever you are spending time outside. Sunscreen also helps protect from wind if you use a zinc base sunscreen it will help come as well and mineral based is great for your face if you can find one that does not give us a whitish appearance that’s even better.
